Yea add it to this post so that Mayans , and Mexicans can start giving their children Nahuatl names  and Mayans start giving their children Mayan names.

Well why cant you unite the Mayans? cultural differences?

Mayan area, such as the Peninsula de Yucatan (Yucatan, Campeche, Quintana Roo) was independized from the Nueva España once, and later tried to independize from México...thats because here is a zone really aislated from the rest of México, we have our own languaje (we use a lot of mayan words in our common speak), our own traditions and our own kind of thinkig...after all this, the mayority of mayan people lives in little pueblos, without much schoolarity...thats why its not factible to try to independize again...but we can find another way to unite México...like teaching indigenous languages in primary schools instead of english, so people can learn depending on its region.

I dont know how is in US, but in México you can change your name...i dont have mayan last name, but i wont change it because there is a lot of family members that i should honor (like my dead grandfather)...

Mayans do had last names wich is the family (clan) were they come from, and only became official at the marriage. In fact, mayans had 4 types of names, one that describes their look at the time of birth, later (at the 12 years) the gave the second one describing how it is their personality. The third was the nickname, gave it to kings. The fourth was when you marry. when you marry somebody the man takes the last name of the fiance's mother family and then the last name of your father family.

For example, the great king of Palenque was Pakal Votan (Pakal(Shield)=Name; Balam(Jaguar)=last name) or the king of Calakmul: Yuknoom Yich Kaak (Yuknoom=last name; Yich kaak=name)..

I hope this will help..

Hey Itzocelotl! In México there is no much nahuatl names remaining...in fact they were almost exterminated...the only nahuatl last names that remained are the ones from the kings that the spaniards gave them nobile (noble) titles..

Instead, here in my area is plenty fully by mayan last names, like: Cocom, Puuc, Tucuch, Pech, Poot, Uc, Ek, Balam, etc...

The nahuatl last names that i know are: Cuahutemoc, Yolotl and Moctezuma...
