The M1A1 Abrams holds a total of 42 rounds, 36 in the ready or semi ready rack, and six in hull storage. These can be a mixture of Sabot, HEAT (High explosive anti-tank), Cannister and OR (obstacle reducing).

I agree that there's no general rule for how many 'shells' a tank might have. It has varied greatly over time, and by model. It naturally depends on the space available to store the rounds and the size of the rounds. During WWII there were usually only 2 'types', either anti-tank AP or anti-personnel HE. The variety of types has tended to increase over time. Further, some tank designs actually had 2 cannons of different calibers. I'm not even talking of the 'mobile fortress' type of tank, but more like the French Char B or the American Grant, with a larger caliber gun in the hull for HE and a smaller caliber gun in the turret for AP. Then of course given practical considerations a tank would not likely have it's full 'allotment' of rounds at any point in time.

DEpends on the mission and the types of shell used. IIRC A miex of AP, HEAT and APers shots mean lesser overall, while magazine of only one type means more. Alos many tanks can carry additional shots as well, for example externally (not a good idea) and inside the compartment.

The Germans also take vacations in Paris; especially during the periods they call "blitzkrieg".

As you say it depends on the tank and the main armament. As a rule of thumb the higher the caliber, the fewer the shells. Anywhere between 30 and 70 is normal for MBTs, depending on age and design.

I know it depends on the type of tanks, but in general... how many shells can the tanks hold? How many in WWII? Modern time? |
