I know Mosquito's mischievous intention Wink in starting this thread (Mosquito, you bad bad boy ...) - as a sarcastic take on those "most XXX and the best XXX" threads that I also have a lot of problems with. But I do want to take advantage of this opportunity to raise an issue that has been in my mind for some time but never had the chance to voice it out.

When I was still a good Christian boy, every time when I read the Bible talking about how grandiose the Empires built by King David and King Solomon were, I got a very distorted geographical image of them (even though my knowledge in geography should be considered very precocious compared to that of kids of my age) - I thought both empires were HUGE. But once my brain really started to grow, I realized that those so-called "empires" were really really tiny. They covered an area no larger than today's Israel, which is of course a very tiny country. (I had a friend who's a Russian Jew and he and his family moved from Oriental Russia to Israel in the mid-90's. He told me that when he first arrived there, he couldn't believe how small Israel is.)

Somehow I felt cheated by the bible ...

Footnote: Of course there are some who even cast doubts on the existence of David's Empire

The Abbasid caliphate in around 1300. Practically taken over my mongols and Seljuqs! Sammara was in ruins and the caliphate was practically dead!

The kingdom of Mari in around 1400 BC (I think) which only had one king and his two sons. They destroyed the kingdom between them.

Many of the "Empires" in Sumeria were tiny

What would be defined as the smaller limit of a kingdom to be called an empire & the lower limit of being a big empire ?

Lilliput is fictional, and the British empire has been dead since around 1956.

The Byzantine Empire at its fall in the mid 1400's... it was essentially as large as the city walls extended.

Yes- not to mention that it was infact a vassal state to Murad and Mehmet (In their double and very short reigns as Sultan). They actually forced the Byzantine emperor to come on campagin to extend the early Ottoman empire!

Nope, read Osmans dream- In the latter stages of the Byzantine empire, they were practically vassals. Constantine XI Palaeologus was hardly ruling over much by the end. Even in all of his reign, he was not really the monarch of the Byzantine "Empire" anymore.

...I think that Jonon has probably got it. Although Monaco is a state, though LilLou, it is not by any means historically or economically an empire.
