Despite there already being a separate topic about classical music in general, I thought that this piece would really deserve it's own special area of discussion.

I really can't even understand how a musical piece can be so good and perfect as the Radetsky March. Therefore, I tried to read a bit more about it, and ended up reading about it from the Wikipedia. Is the article about the March truthful or is it lacking? Wink

And if you haven't heard it yet, now is the time. I can't post a link now though.

So you made your topic on the Rad. March, rider. Smile Well yes, Strauss has put together a nice composition indeed. But superior to the triumphant pieces of Beethoven, like King Stephen: Overture and 5th Symphony Mvt.1? Nah Tongue

I did watch a youtube clip of this, where the conductor got the audience involved, which was entertaining. http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=9zlE5ipwna8

What is it with this piece that you particularly find spectacular, rider?

I think in Vienna they play this on every new year's concert and the public claps, it is a tradition.

I totally agree, but did not write, so not to hurt Austrian national sensitivities.

Well.. it's just *so* captivating. I can't understand how you can't like it. It is so festive and all...

Well, specifically, the part about the military having a special tradition with this song (stomping feet, as the Wiki suggested)? It also said, I believe, that this March was very popular amongst the soldiers and so forth (I can understand why, but would like confirmation).

Only Mozart's 40th or 41st is able to match it in a few ways, but even then.. not completely. Albeniz, perhaps? But no.. Radetzsky's March creates a class which can't be followed by anything else.

Ah there we go rider - now you've got your finger on the button. Mozart's 40th, and namely 41st...wow. Different style to the militaristic march of Radeztky, but in their own way more grand, triumphant and magnanimous. I know we are just discussing on the grounds of personal taste, and I can completely understand why you love the Radeztky March over all else - I have the same opinion of a number of other classical pieces, which I just find too unfathomably brilliant.

Have you been to a live performance in an opera or concert hall before? If not, I strongly recommend it because youtube, or even good bit rate mp3 files, have nothing on real sound. It's an amazing experience.

I'm planning on getting to one of those Neujahrskonzerten sometime... That will be epic - especially since they *always* play the Radetzky March, and *always* in the end.

It certainly is a stirring piece especially when played in the right atmosphere.  The New Year concert in Vienna is certainly one of those times. The performance is shown on BBC television every New Year. I believe tickets are usually booked about a year in advance!!!

Yeah, that's what the Wiki told me as well.

I must say though, am not hurrying to it. I can wait until 2020 if I need to.

Rider you have good taste; the Radetzky march is quite enjoyable to listen to.  Its hard to hear and not start clapping or toe tapping.
