Just curious, where can I learn about the origins of marriage, it's purpose, and the oldest recorded history of such an event...or perhaps it goes further back than the word marriage, perhaps ceremony?

What do you guys think?

Thanks

Well done a rare interesting question.

Unfortuanately it is unanswerable. The first recorded civilisation, Sumeria, had an established marriage system when they began writing, so it existed in pre-history. To confirm this hunter gatherer tribal societies throughout the world and Mesoamerica when discovered which was a paleolithic level civilisation, all had/have marriage. How far it goes back is impossble to tell. However it's worth noting many animal species mate for life so it is not unreasonable to believe we did it long before we even evolved into humans, we just added the ritual elements when we became advanced hominids.

Even homosexual marriage predates history, or, at least, is known in such pre-literate societies as the North American Indians.

Mesoamerica wasn't paleolithic!

Paleolithic refers to Old Stone Age. Neolithic is New Stone Age. But Mesoamericans were past even this, as they possessed metallurgy (primitive as it was, and limited to soft metals like copper and gold) and were heavily urbanized.

Some groups, like the Tarascans, possessed bronze. So the best estimate is that they were in the chalcolithic (Copper Age) at the cusp of the bronze age. Not entirely a satisfactory description in some ways, though, as they were much more advanced in several areas (especially in terms of the complexity of their social institutions, the development of their cities and infrastructure, etc) than a typical Old World chalcolithic civilization, closer to what one would see in the early bronze age in Mesopotamia or Egypt. They had features like writing, calendar systems, advanced mathematics, roads, aqueducts, canals and irrigation, etc

Even among tribal groups in North America, many were well past the paleolithic era and into the neolithic, the agricultural revolution.

That's interesting, is there a source to this? Or a place I could read about it? I've had trouble finding info on that particular area

Googling on 'berdache' or 'two-spirits' will turn up a lot of information.
