What did the first form of life look like? And when did it appear? And are we actually related to it?

It looked like this
To judge the fatherless and the oppressed, that the man of the earth may no more oppress.

Being as both an Administrator and an individual who is an Editor and Global Moderator spread shame among all three of their respective groups by responding to a post on the Intellectual Forum like it was in Historical Amusment or AE Tavern topic, (I propose a 1 month ban from from Interllectual forum for both of them).

I'll maximise their shame by giving an intelligent answer. The first life on Earth was, by one theory a single cell organism that couldn't reproduce, (do a google pic search for an image ("single cell organism") after trillions/gazillions of these emerged, finally several came along that could by mutation reproduce and from one of these we are descended.

P.S. I don't claim this to be correct, just an intelligent reply based upon 1 of many scientific theories around so worthy of AE Intellectual Forum. So David please ban these aforementioned for abuse of the forum........

Paul, Komnenos's and Hugoster's posts were a parody of Ponce de Leon's posts. Because of this, they should not get banned. I see what you are trying to do. Eliminate your competition one by one until soon enough you become the lone moderator and head of the whole AE Community.LOL

Er Um, I'm not a moderator, have never been, and am about a millionth billionth person on the list likely ever to be asked......

You're the third person this month to mistake me for a mod, the other two by PM. No-one ever did this before, I guess my latest posts have wimped out, I'll start trolling as from tomorrow.....

P.S. EB if you think by brown tonging the mods on this forum will get you anywhere, you are absolutely correct.

I always thought you were a mod. I remember the one time you had like one million posts because your post number was edited.

By the way, I wasn't "brown tonging"(or whatever you want to call it) the mods, I was just pointing out the reason for their parodies.

I agree with Paul, that that was an unexcusable lapse in judgement, brought upon by late night fatigue and and an understandable unawareness of the fact that this is actually the "Intellectual" forum.
I had some very strong words with myself over breakfast and I don't think there is any need to take any further action.

In an attempt to restore some sanity to this thread <shame>:

In the same vein I'll continue:

No. Cellular organisms come along fairly late in the development of life.  Prokaryotes (including bacteria) have no cell wall and no nucleus. They developed before Eukaryotes (including us), which are single-celled and then multi-celled and came along later.

And there are viruses and prions that have been around even longer, back to the point where it becomes difficult to define what 'life' means.

Possibly the first life was simply a single gene with nothing else attached to it (as in Hugo's illustration). I don't claim to have much of an idea.

And no, we're probably not descended from it, because it almost certainly died out.

That is very interesting. That single gene that might have created the first cell probably died out. Then what would be our earliest decendent be anyway?

I believe there is evidence that the life came from simple organic
molecules relating with other organic molecules, we are nothing but a bunch
(a big bunch) of organic molecules.

I think an experiment has been done to replicate what Earth might have
looked like at the time that these molecules were supposed to be
assembling.

Some other small organic molecule. Possibly more than one that eventually combined. I have no idea how one could find out.

I just think it's worth remembering that life may have started up more than once - in fact many, many times.
