I think that the Aztecs rank high up there. they had all of Mexico under there Control and were a strong Peoples. They had Aqueducts as well and though they had no for of writing(I believe they did not) They managed to keep good governing methods over the lands they Controlled. The Incas were good also. And many other Native American tribes were also Powerfull.

My vote has been fot Incas, but the different north-central cultures like Olmecs, Apotecs, Mixtecs, Mayas, and Azthecs were very strong during some periode.

I vote for the Mapuches, (also known as Araucanos)
It's paradoxical that the most powerful pre-colombian empires were defeated with relative easy. Some warrior tribe, though, could stand and defeat the Spaniards.
The Mapuches were never defeated or controlled by the Spaniards. They were free up to 1881. And, in certain real sense, they never gave up, not even today. They copied European tactics and applied them against the invasors.
Here is Lautaro, the greatest Mapuche Hero, with the ancient Mapuche flag (which now is part of the Chilean flag)

I voted for the Incans as they controlled more territory, and probably
more people, than any of the others. They were also the most efficient
organisers of the Native Americans. Futhermore, their empire was more
centralised than the Aztecs, and less despised by their nieghbours and
subjects as a whole. One of their most impressive feats, in my opinion,
was thier road system, which covered the entire empire, itself
comprising of almost solely rugged terrain. The roads even had
rest/storage houses at regular intervals across its entire length,
along with messengers at standard intervals

Surely one of Southern American tribes: Aztecs or Inca. Mapuches seem to be strong, but Pinguin You could have add how big land they controled.

They controlled most of Southern Argentina and Chile, and kept those territories since 1541 (Spanish invasion) up to 1881 (Chilean army took theirs territories). That is, a period of 350 years.

I voted for the Aztecs. In the book Pastwatch: the Redemption of Christopher Columbus, a sci-fi novel by Orson Scott Card. Card speculated that if the Aztecs would have had a few more decades, they would have been the ones to explore and conquer lands across the Atlantic.
He supported this by saying that the shift of power, that occured shortly before Cortes' invasion, greatly weakened their civilization because it put a halt to the Aztec's technologicl advancement 'projects.' He also said the Aztec's religious belief in human sacrifices killed many people whose skills could have enhanced the Aztec's technology. It's a funny thought, completely speculative, but it is the famous question historians ponder all the time "what if?" |

The Aztecs didn't last much. They didn't have the time necessary to addapt to European tactics!
The people that oppossed the European invasion the most where: The Natives of the great plains in North America, the Mayans of Chiapas to Guatemala, the Amazonian Indians, and the Mapuches of Southern South America. And they have certain advantages and the terrain.
When Natives of North America or the Mapuche fought against the European they did so riding horses, using European firearms and European tactics. And that required time to develop.
The Amazonians, on the other hand, could resist because they lived in theirs environment that forced Europeans to walk on foot.

The aztecs had a proper, good and well kept empire. the only problem is that they had annual sacrifices of 58000 people a year.
