Persian history in opinion is probably the most underated history in the world. Persia if you include (greater persia) has done so much for the human civilization since the cradle of civilizations were formed more then 5000 years. Western historians usually mention places like Greece, Egypt, China, India when they talk about history and inventions, but for some reason they always miss Persia.

Here is a nice article on Persia:

The problem is not that we "underate" their history. The problem is that we always hear about the Persian as "enemy". I think it's because we inherited a lot of texts from the areas you mention and not Persia.

I would like to know WHY there have never been any movies made about Perso-Roman wars - they were epic.  Read up on the Seige of Amida if you will, for example.

That's a darned good question there, Zagros. I have no idea. There is certainly no logical explanation other than Hollywood bias. The period is actually among the most fascinating in history. I, for one, would like to see the war between Khusrau (sp?) and Heraclius interpreted on film; in fact, I'd be willing to shell out oodles of money for it. Unfortunately, I don't see Hollywood thinking out of the box much these days, and traditional Hollywood dictates that Americans care about Greeks a lot, Romans a little, and anyone east of the Aegean not at all. It's pathetic and unjustifiable both; unfortunately, it happens to be the case.

If you ever want to get together on an indie film about the last Romano-Persian war, I'd be glad to help. Smile

Well, though Civilization is taught to have been born in Mesopotamia and there is no question about that even in the West, you are right that Persia have gotten little attention. The reason is as mentioned, they had the unfortune to be the enemies of the Greeks and Roman, which hems their PR department.

edit:
I did recently see a one-hour appraising program about Persian history, presented by one of the ex-Monty Python guys, so times might be changing.

Persias history is NOT underated. It is actually glorious and a gem for mankinds history. Like many mentioned...Enemies, fear, being "far" makes it distant, not uninteresting.
