Looks like Bush commuted the sentences of Border Patrol Agents Ignacio Ramos and Jose Compean. For many Americans this is a happy occasion and hopefully they will be back with their famlies. To many, many, many Americans these two Americans are heros and were basically railroaded by the government.

I have often heard the question, in various article, who was Bush protecting when he refused to commute these men?

I have written many emails in support of their freedom and I am very happy-    One rare occasion for some Moose Drool beer from Montana!! Johnny Sutton, the federal prosecuter, was a liar and he should have been prosecuted for false evidence. But he is a Bush-bot so it would never happen.

Agreed!

These men should never had been put in jail let alone prosecuted in the first place.

I agree and it is one of my many beefs with Bush and his administration. I think they not only should be cleared of all charges but they should be offered their positions back with back pay. I hope there is a fund raiser to help them out- I would like to contribute to this but I am sure I will hear about it on www.numbersusa or another blog. It is funny how the media portrayed them as racists and anti Mexican when they are Mexican-AMERICANS. I put it into caps because, to me, regardless of race they are Americans and heros.

I don't know enough about this topic, but it seems that the officers used excessive force and were found guilty. And it is very difficult to get law enforcement officers to be found guilty of anything, so the chances that they indeed abused power is great.

It also seems that these officers became a cause by the right, some to seem to like the idea of border patrol people shooting at unarmed people trying to cross the border without documents.

I ask you to reconsider this position. First, pick your causes carefully. In the face of it, celebrating police brutality is not a good cause. Second, Christians cannot be, in good faith, supporters of brutality towards other people since the Bible clearly states that one must not hurt others. Finally, realize that there is only so much time resources. Picking up dubious causes like this either hurt your side directly, by appearing as champions of police brutality, or indirectly, by sapping resources that could be used for better causes.

I tend to agree with Hugo, but I'd like more information, not just charges that the prosecutor lied and stuff like that.

The jury was unanimous on all counts including the not guilty verdict on attempted murder. So what are the grounds for disbelieving the jury?

And I wonder why Bush changed his mind after two years?

On the face of it, he merely seems to have considered the jail term excessive, and the punishment so far enough. I suppose there's a case for that, since it's a matter of opinion, not fact. Calling them innocent is a matter of fact, not opinion, and juries are there to establish facts.

The pressure on him disappeared a couple of weeks ago compared to two years ago.

The guy they shot was a drug runner. The same ones who have turned Mexico upside down and who have killed scores of people along both sides of the border. Why are border patrol agents given firearms if they are going to be put in jail for using them against dangerous criminals?

I honestly think the reason they were put in jail in the first place was because the drug runner they shot was CIA-affiliated as opposed to being affiliated to local Mexican drug lords who are in competition with the CIA and the State Department. And/or they were trying to set an example for border patrol agents who actually do their jobs (the government's aim is to keep the borders porous as they have been for most of this decade). These are more realistic scenarios than the government trying to prevent police brutality at a border crossing in the middle of the desert, while it polices the world and treats its own citizens like suspects.

I'm surprised these two were released considering the jailing of innocents is not that extreme in a society where warantless searches, spying on your own people and incarcerating people without a charge has become accepted practice. Might these two guys have shown some excessive force? Maybe. But thats not the point of this all, or else tens of thousands of policemen across America would be in jail right now. The bigger issues are the CIA-affiliated drug runners in Mexico and the fact that our borders, by design, have more holes than a sponge.
