Only medieval Muslim military leader respected by both Muslims and Christians alike, not many Muslim leaders have earned so much praise from Western scholars as Saladin. There are many Hollywood movies made on life and conquests of Saladin by famous Hollywood directors such as Kingdom of Heaven. A leader who is still an inspiration for modern Muslims, a leader who was and is a symbol of Arab nationalism.

He was a Kurd wasn't he?

I particularly enjoyed Kingdom of Heaven's depiction of Saladin.  Very classy.  Possibly enhanced by the utter limp-wristed, damp-pants performance of Orlando Bloom.

It's a shame the film was set before the third crusade...Wink

Yeah, Arab nationalism. The "Eagle of Saladin" appears on the coat of arms of Palestine, Iraq and Egypt. Saddam Hussein rather ironically used to compare himself to Saladin (which is why you find that Tikrit is in a province called Salah ad-Din).

I think the eagle used on pan-arab flags represented the symbol of the quraish tribe.

The Eagle was not invented by Saladin. And Saladin was in no way shape or form an Arab. A Kurd from what is now Iraq.

Yeah, Saladin was a Kurd, but he's a symbol for Arab nationalism anyway. It's ironic, though he did a lot to reunify much of the Arab heartland under the Ayyubid Sultanate, after centuries of division and invasion.

As for the eagle, it was based on an eagle carved on the Cairo Citadel which was partly built by Saladin, so it became associated with Saladin. The symbol of the Quraysh tribe is a hawk, which appeared on the Coat of Arms of Syria.

Axxx the kurds... If Saladin had worked for kurds, we had been the strongest country in the whole middel east...

He worked just for Islam, but what can we do for arabs, claims all as arabs, like saladin, and who has done good job for Islam.

I want arabs to tell me what do they have? oil? no I don't mean oil.. I mean historical generals...

They just fight each other.. not more... 21 arab countries against israel..

Israel 1 - 0 Arab countries (21)

I am glad that the people here know that Saladin was a Kurd not an Arab..

What's this discussion got to do with Israel and Arabs? I like Kurds in general and support them but you seem like you are trolling to me.

no man.. you are wrong..

arabian nationalism, on their TV channels.. you don't see what I see..
They make historical movies and series.. of their battelions and their wars which they have never won.. I see in all website, all they are against kurds..

They want a free palestinian state, but they don't want an kurdish independed stat?

I have respect for all who respect me.. Love I will love you back..

How do you support the kurds`? what have you done to support them? just puting the comments? that won'y help.

I have some reasons which is historical reason that there is no independed Kurdistan today.

1. What saladin do for Islam, got back Jerusalim, I don't say that people in the west don't think like you.. They think in history and the religion is one of the reason.. Christian vs. Islam. That was wrong that Saladin was a Kurd, he haven't done any thing for kurds.

2. When Persian and Median empire was united and they called todays Iran for Iran, which means The land of Arian. The persian fooled us Median/kurds and got over the empire. When the median empire fall out, we got nothing more.. we lose our land, culture and language. Persian claim median/kurdish history as theirs.

3. When we kurds fighted against britain, in Todays Iraq and Turkey, for what? nothing, but for iraq and turkey, who fooled us again..

4. France, Swiss and Britain fooled us again, when they replaced the Sevres treaty with Lausanne treaty. The reason was, that kurds fighted them, britain in iraq and turkey, and france in Syria. And because of what Saladin do in the history..

how can you feel, when your country/land is devided into 4 parts? and other people claim your history as theirs?

I am not extreme muslim, and I don't pray 5 times every day.

and sorry for my bad english......

I understand your point but you can't drop these subjects on any unrelated thread. Open a new one.
