A little background about Nalanda University.

It was one of earliest center of learning in the world finally culminating in a university by 5th century AD.  At that time it was a great center of learning, and later gained even higher importance, since its elder sibling at Taxila was destroyed by the White Huns or the Hepthalites.  Nalanda boasted of students from foreign lands such as Korea, Japan, China, Tibet, Indonesia, Persia and Turkey at that time, which was an amazing feat.

An idea to revive it has been around for long time and finally efforts to revive this great university with a multi-nation consortium took shape few years back.

An old article from 2006 by a dean at Yale discusses it:

and finally most current news about it, citing delays in the start of classes, according to Singapore's foreign minister:

If and when it finally starts working, could it be the oldest functioning university in the world?

i dont really think so because it wasnt functioning for many hundred years now. This new post graduate university would most likely be a descendent of the original.
