The arthurian legend is also one root of the chivalric idea.
That legend was loved in a lot of European countries back then.

For example its known that Holy Roman Emperor Frederick Barbarossa was deeply into Arturian legends and believed that a knight has to be like its described in that tales. And that the live of a knight is the only good and noble way a man can live.

In a giant ceremony in Frankfurt, wich was the largest festival that ever happend in German lands til then, with lots of international publicum, Emperor Barbarossa dubbed 35.000 young men to knights, including his 2 sons.

With this oath:

We swear to
protect the holy church
to be always loyal to the holy emperor
whos the leader of the holy empire and our highest liege lord

We swear to protect the widdows and the orphans
to honor and respect the women

May god help us!

And the emperor said:

In the name of god, in the name of holy Mikel and Holy George, I dub you knights!
Be brave, stalwart and loyal!
For the honor of god
for the defence of the Empire
for the protection and rise of the weak
for the downfall of the strong, arrogant and evils

Take this blow and no one from now on. (ceremonial beating with sword blade. the last time, this is not revenged)

A lot of romantic blabla ;)
