    Posted: 21-Jul-2006 at 22:44
For many years, propaganda has been used in wars, particularly in the modern ones. The use of propaganda is simple, the aim is to influence people's opinions actively, rather than merely to communicate the facts about something. Avertising and public relations can be thought of as propaganda that promotes a commercial product or shapes the perception of an organization, person, or brand, though in post-WWII usage the word "propaganda" more typically refers to political or nationalist uses of these techniques, or to the promotion of a set of ideas.

During the Second World War, The Nazis believed in propaganda as a vital tool in achieving their goals. Adolf Hitler was impressed by the power of Allied propaganda during World War I, and believed that it had been a primary cause of the collapse of morale and revolts in the German home front and Navy in 1918.

Nazi propaganda before the start of World War II had several distinct audiences: -German audiences were continually reminded of the struggle of the Nazi Party and Germany against foreign enemies and internal enemies, especially Jews

-Ethnic Germans in countries such as Czechoslovakia, Poland and the Soviet Union were told that blood ties to Germany were stronger than their allegiance to their new countries.

- All audiences were reminded of the greatness of German cultural, scientific, and military achievements.

The United States and the Soviet Union both used propaganda extensively during the Cold War. Both sides used film, television, and radio programming to influence their own citizens, each other, and Third World nations. During the 2003 Iraq invasion, the iraqi information minister Mohamed Saeed al-Sahaf repeatedly claimed Iraqi forces were decisively winning every battle. Even up to the overthrow of the Iraqi government at Baghdad, he maintained that the U.S. would soon be defeated, in contradiction with all other media. Due to this, he quickly became a cult figure in the West, and gained recognition on the WeLoveTheIraqiInformationMinister.com. The Iraqis, misled by his propaganda, on the other hand, were shocked when instead Iraq was defeated.

Propaganda has been used in almost every modern war. When will it end?

Nothing wrong with propaganda so long as it promotes a GOOD thing...

People are swayed by emotion, not so much by intellect. So long as a majority of people belong to the masses, then propaganda will constantly be employed for the simple fact that it works.

And who will be the judge of that?

ha..like the human race could survive long enough to see the universe end....we already have only been here for less than 1% of the time stuff has been around....

Anyway, I am a collector of propoganda, specifically from the world wars.  Though I think people assume propganda is much newer than it truly is.  Egyptian heirglyphs contain it, Ramses II was a master of using it to promote outright falsehoods that people belived, and Victorian era sources are filled with funny pictures of European states as stereotypes being swalloed by Russian Octopi.

Although the foremost objective is to dehumanize the enemy, there is also a notable grouping of making the enemy look foolish.  To both build up the threat and then tear it down again is part of the strategy of dehumanization.

Theres also the inspirational or the guilt tripping kind, as the most famous single peice of propoganda so simplistically implies:
"the people are nothing but a great beast...
I have learned to hold popular opinion of no value."

Excellent propaganda, in a good cause:

LOL Good one,

Still, I do not believe in 'good' propaganda. Propaganda is, after all, forcing one opinion upon others without proper reasoning.

propoganda is either good or bad.

its just the art of convincing others to your way of thinking.

obvoius propoganda like these posters are harmless becuase you see them for what they are, the worse kind is the type that becomes truth yet you never knew you were convinced.......

I think some of you are confusing propaganda with persuasion. Persuasion is a form of influence. It is the process of guiding people toward the adoption of an idea, attitude, or action by rational and symbolic means. Persuasion is meant to benefit all parties in the end, propaganda doesnt'.

One lesson well understood in both Hitler's Germany and Stalin"s Russia was that propaganda is most effective when it is backed by terror.

Propaganda is certainly good to the ones who use that, and bad to those who is used against. It is a way to lead masses, and it will exist as long as the masses and the leaders will exist

Propaganda will never end so long as one side tries to convince another of is merit/superiority.
