After watching various archaeological shows, Time Team for example, I have a question that I hope is not too simplistic.

There always seems, to me at least, plenty of Roman coinage found when the digs are Roman specific. But when digging is post Roman there seems to be "less" coinage found. Now as a layman I guess that the Saxons, for example, would not have had a monetary system but I would have thought that from the Norman invasion onwards there would have been substantial finds of coins. But I see little dug up. Why would that be? Thanks in advance.

I think that there are plenty of Norman coins around, so any finds aren't particularly noteworthy. I don't think there's a sharp break with the Conquest: coins just got commoner through the AS period and continued to do so with the Normans,
