Topic: A New Forum

Subject: A New Forum
Date Posted: 07-Jun-2009 at 23:28
For some time, we have worked on setting up a new forum.
The database for this forum has reached the maximum size of more than 500MB which only confirms the success of All Empires - the largest community based on general history on the net.

We will start from scratch on the new forum, and keep this "old" forum as an archive for our members and anyone else who seek information on historical topics.
"The Archive" will become Read-Only, but will serve well as inspiration and base of knowledge with the vast number of discussions on board.

The schedule for implementation is as follows.
  • June 18'th
    * The new forum will be introduced to the membership and at the same time, it will no longer be possible to start new topics on this, the old forum (The Archive).
    * However, it will still be possible to continue ongoing discussions here.
    * New topics must be posted on the new forum.
  • July 1'st
    * The implementation will be completed. This forum (The Archive) will be made Read-Only.
    * All discussions and activity will take place on the new forum.
We will try to import all members with username and password to the new forum .
This means the members won't have to re-register. However - it may be necessary for a few members to register - but we will find out about that after June 18'th.
We cannot import all information provided in profiles, so there will be a number of things to update - but with a positive approach, "we can do it".
We will provide all the help and support the members will need.

Thanks to the Moderators for their hard work on the new forum.

The Admin Group.

PS...
We have another surprise in store for the membership on the new forum - so stay tuned. Wink

Btw Northman, do you think it would be possible to let any members who need to re-register know via pm if you can answer that at the current time?

In addition I can't wait to see the surprise!Big smile

Hi Kevin

Some members are already transferred - but I'm working on to get everyone imported.

It won't be necessary with PM's - we will know after the 18'th when everyone can try to log in to the new forum. If they can't - they must re-register.

Interesting...

Will AE be getting a revamp of some sort? Maybe some new curtains and tiling?

I hope the New Forum will kept the secions as they are. In particular, the "History of the Americas" section; my favorite.

We have tinkered a bit with the structure, we have always done that. But the focus on history will remain divided as always by region and timeperiod.

The new forum has a few changes. You will still be familiar with most of the look. Members will need to update some elements of their profiles. We can help you with that.

C.C. a chat sounds like a good idea. We'll see what we can do.

This all sounds great!

Will we still be able to post tables?  Will the limit on sizes of the tables be increased?  Innumerable times I was working on Top 100 Generals tables and I'd get a mySQL error for overflowing the table size....  (I don't suppose anyone else has ever run across that...)

I do say that the ability to post tables on here has been very, very helpful to me in working on my lists.

Thanks, everyone!

I can reveal the most significant change you will find on the new forum.

Like Sparten said, there are some changes to the structure, but the most striking change is that you cannot post in the main forums anymore but only in the subforums.

Here is an example.

GENERAL HISTORY                     (Category headline)
World History                               (main forum - NO posting here)
  - General Topics                            (subforum - you can post)
  - Archaeology & Anthropology                     (do)
  - Historical Arts and Architecture                 (do)

It might be easier to digest if you think of it like a storage cabinet for files.

 - THE CATEGORY is the cabinet
 - The Main Forums are drawers in the cabinet
 - The Subforums are the files in the drawers
 - The Threads are the papers in the files

Like both Sparten and North mentioned there are a few changes indeed, but good and exciting changes that will stimulate posting a bit more. The move is good for our community, and it will ensure All Empires to be a thriving community as it has been for decades to come.

Only a few days until access to the new forum will be granted to the membership! Very exciting. In order for the new forum to go off with a bang, I encourage you all to get really involved, making new threads, contributing to discussions.etc. You may even want to think up some good topics in advance.

We'll keep you updated.

Kind regards,

Yes Dolphin - capacity. Your hat (or what's under it) isn't that dumb  Wink
We are switching technology as well - from mySQL database to SQL - with infinite capacity, whereas the old is on the very limit of what it can take.

Thats why.

Btw I'm sorry I didn't think of this earlier,

but do you think it would be possible to give alternate & speculative history it's own section like the kind general, natural and military history have in the new forum, in whatever form that maybe in the new forum? Because I've noticed most other history forums on the net have given alternate & speculative history it's own section.

This is just my two cents,Smile

Alternative History has its own subforum on the new Forum, Kevin.
