This question refers to how much the Europeans (and the world) SEEM to dislike Americans.  Now donm't get the public mixed up with the government.  The question is how do you feel about the PUBLIC.  This question comes from the fact that I have seen numerous accounts of the Europeans and the European press stating how stupid, fat, and annoying Americans are.  I really want to now if this is the true feeling from Europeans (and the rest of the world I suppose)!

In my travels in Europe I found that most Europeans like Americans but they do not always like our government's foreign policies.
I was always treated with respect and kindness and I have been to Europe five times, totaling ten months. Even in Greece I was treated with the utmost respect and never had problems. I do remember a huge protest in Syntagma Square over the Afghan war in November of 2001. They were playing music that sounded like it was from the Russian Revolution in Greek. There was a man in the front of the procession with an American flag and it was covered with Swastikas. I was offended but when I asked I was told that it was not aimed at your average American. I am bold and not afraid to confront something I do not like but when I realized it was not aimed at me as an American I was happy. My country is not perfect but I still love it!!!
I also remember going to the Island of Aegina and missing the ferry but finally after getting back to Athens, by the Metro, I was shocked to see the aftermath of a riot. I have missed a riot and someone had thrown a bottle filled with gasoline into the Metro train but no one was hurt thank God. I was very happy that I had missed the ferry.
Advice: never take the speed ferry when the sea is rough!! I almost lost it five times and I saw an entire Greek soccer team disappear into the water closet.

Well  the ordinary american didn't do anything bad to me so I don't have anything against them. But this is my opinion I also know people who hate them /you /..but most of the time is because of your Government's politics.

It's the fact we're not priviliged enough to have St GWB as our leader that turns me green with envy.

The general reason why Europeans and the world in general has a dislike for America is for the fact that many many Americans believe they are superiour, and have a profound disrespect for other cultures and languages. Now we could live with that, a cocky guy can be manageable but not only are americans cocky, but have this intersting theory that with everyone carrying guns around the world is a safer place

But it doesn't end there, they believe they stand for freedom, while they're nation's foreign policy encourages the absolute opposite worldwide, and not only encourages mind you but applies the complete opposite. THe American dream...: Live free.....COUGH COUGH (by putting everyone else in slavery) ...

But to top things off, most American's are completly ignorant of their nation's true foreign policy and get brainwashed by every fart the president makes.

Yes indeed, god bless America.....psst: cuz it might crumble at any moment!

Now on a lighter tone i know some great americans who are really cool ppl it's just like mentionned earlier, american foreign policy tends to make the prejudices. I have nothing againt most americans just get a bit frustrated when they are compeltly ignorant to what happens beyond their borders or about anything their country does...once again, I know they are not ALL like that...

I was thinking, because America is such a superpower, if we go out then alot of the world goes out to, yet we are dependent on the rest of the world to. Like China, Tiwan (sorry can't spell) and a few other countries where most of our good are imported from.   China is a rising superpower in economics in my opinion.  With everyboby moving over there for low labor costs, China's economy is increasing.    While Americans are losing jobs Which is our fault

How come every forum on the internet has the question, what do Europeans think about Americans posted one time or another, but no European ever asks the reverse.

Is it because Americans are especially insecure about themselves and feel they need validation by others or that Europeans are too arrogant and snobbish to even consider the rest of the world, or a bit of both?

Hehe, no I know that my friend, I think Canada does about 70% of it's trade with america. It might even be more, I am a bit ignorant on the exact figures mind you, lol.....k but stating that America has got itself a quiet unattractive debt and could be on the verge of another depression does not mean I'm denying the fact that this debt hurts us Canadians as much as it does Americans.

I will say however that you Americans have a fine policy of ruinning the image of all us westerners with your foreign policy, which is precisly the reason why roughly 95% of Canadians are greatly agaisnt the idea of annexation with America in any way...and speaking of ignorance, many americans I know are very ignorant to what goes on beyond their borders, to why terrorists exist to if Pharoahs still rule egypt....just in general. In fact they tell me they don't learn about outside u.s in school.

Once again, I know not all Americans are liek this I'm just explaining why this general attitude exists between Europeans and americans.

annexation: Check the latest news on economic plans between Canada, US and Mexico.

pharoah: I'm not sayign they teach that I'm saying they don't teach anything at all seeing how they're completly oblivious of the state of the outside world.

About this oblivious of the state of the world. It comes with age and is BS. They are more arrogant than ignoratnt. The US, a country of 300 million is going to have more ignorant people than a country of 30 million but also many smarter ones.

Well just the fact that most Americans believe their coutnry is the best in theworld means that you have a looooooot of arrogant ones. I love my country but I dont' believe it above any others.

And about annexation, they were talking of adopting the american currency, well the americans were suggesting it. There's also that North american Missile defense plan where of course Americans would construct expensive unnecessary military outposts all over Canada...and if there was a war we would be thankful but this is jsut paranod americans putting their hands on Canadian freedom.

Anyways, seeing how america is our only terrestrial neighbour suppose we aught to get along with them eh? Just no missles wanted.....sorry...

There is already too much American culture in Canada.

Well,I think its being a bit of a stereotype if you say all Americans think their country is superior.Becuase the fact that many americans come from immigrant families, most can say their native country is the one they love the most. Many americans are actually nationalistic about the country their ethnicity or race is from. And Americans aren't the only ignorant ones in this world,it is becuase of our nations policies and decisions that so many people from other countries hate americans. The fact is,the're also hating many of their own people, because America is filled with people from around the world.I can tell you, though, that the americans who think they're superior to the other people of the world, are the ones who clearly don't think much where they actually come from.

I had a discussion about this in class once, and I can tell you 85% of the students say that America isn't the best country in the world, becuase they feel that America's policies are what give this nation a bad reputation.I'll be honest,America is almost an international dictatorship, telling other countries what they can,and cannot do,especially in the terms of nuclear weapons, and such.I personally hate that America is like this.

What you say about America consisting of ppl's from all over is completly true and is Canada. THat we have such a history of openess is something I think we can both be proud of THe statue of liberty in New York had always been a sign of ultimate freedom and greeting to the europeans arriving during much of the United State's history and at the time, America truly was the land of liberty. But with it's modern role as world power, like you've said, now America tends to dictate to others what they are capable of and so on, see this is what most of the world dislikes, it's not so much the common people of America it's just these foreign policies that have come ot the point where many anti-american sentiments are growing.

O and I admit fullheartedly that there are many other ignorant ppl in this world, not only americans, why those russians they....lol kidding! But I dunno what it is but American history of fighting for everything with the belief war achieves something is what I disagree with, see I am of german descent and when I think that such a beautiful country as GErmany which I have visited, suffered so much for the conciquences of war. Nazi germany also had a dream, and it tore the place apart. Now I'm not saying dreams are bad or that the american "dream" ressembles in any way nazi idealism but it's just this "triggor happy" attitude many americans tend to have, it's not kool.

I mean for example I have a friend who went to florida on vacation, and while there on a bus came into conversation with some americans and at one point they asked what some other Canadian vacation "places" were and my friend acidentally mentionned cuba. WEll sure enough an american said "I think anyone who visits cuba should be shot." as bluntly as that. To think they were jsut talking about tourism my friends. Listen, I believe in freedom of speech, but we dont' talk about guns that casually. Personally I find this a rude comment and I dont' care what ur beliefs are, you dont' say that. No one deserves to be shot. THere are many other ways how to state one's dislike of a communist regime. Now I don't know how this comment was taken by the other americans but apparently it was nothing out of the ordinary.

Now I realize I must sound extremely prejudice agaisnt americans by my previous comments. Plz know that I do not judge an entire ppl on one story but it still leaves one wondering, and then all the reports on the news of school shootings.  I dont' think there's been a murder in my town in 30 years and I live in a small urbain center, I mean compare that to any American town. Now that Americans in general believe guns can solve something, that in itself I consider a bit ignorant...

But anyway on a lighter tone, I agree that it's mostly ppl who dont' think of where they come from that tend to be the conceded ones, and I understand perfectly not all americans are like that. All cultures have their strengths and in loving them all, we have freedom

You know,Studies show that America has more crima rate than any other country in this world...you do have a point.I mean, for every 10 Amercian crimes, there is one crime in the rest of the world some people say here. But of course,it might not be true, its just a saying...But I agree with you

No offense intended, but does America really have that much freedom? When it became independent it was indeed one of the freest (sp?) countries in the world. But  things have changed. I think there are currently several (mostly European) countries in the world that are freer (sp?) than the USA.

yes, right now the US is denying its own free heritage.  Not to flatter you but I think your country is the freeist of all right now...hmm.how hard is it to learn Dutch and get citizenship?

"All cultures have their strengths and in loving them all, we have freedom"

That last statement I made was just like a concluding sentence, as in it's a good policy to have. I wasn't necessarily referring to America there, and I don't believe Americans have full freedom but I'm just saying that if we do this, we'll be one step closer to democracy and freedom.

I honour American history but like you, fellah from Panama, (sry I forget your name), the america of today is not altogther the same thing...

Actually,I think he is from Netherlands.

Anyway,it is true that the US is certainly not the freest country in the world.Canada,in many aspects and ways,is more prosperous and free than US.US foriegn policies, heritage issues, and other things are pushing on its people.

I can tell you this,it is true that the US is an international dictatorship!

Hmmm. Getting citizenship is quite hard recently. The current government is extremely tough on immigration. Though you're from a wealthy country, so I guess it won't be a problem. But you have to be quick, authoritarian anti-terror and anti-crime laws are starting to arise here as well.

though I doubt they are as draconian as here!

Pre WW2 America was probably the freeist country int he world, and defeinately pre-WW1 America, although in the 20's there was a breif period where Japan was the freeist country (BREIF) certainly in at least the past 20 years the Netherlands, Scandinavian countries, Canada, and some others are freer, I guess a good question would be why?  What has changed?

THe fact that America has become a world power is what has changed. Power turns an honourable man into a descriminatory criminal....not always but what you all say is true, America is no longer the free country it was, no matter what that contradicting Bush claims.

And yes, I believe thsoe are the freeist countries in the world at the moment, the scandinavia lands, canada and maybe the Benolux lands? ....

And i dunno if you ppl were referring to me but I am not dutch, I am Canadian; live in Canada, eat in Canada, sleep in Greenland tho...(sleep in Canada too lol....but I am of french, german and british origin and speak german at home adn grand supporter of the Bundesrepublik Deutchland! Go to a french school however with french ppl yet live in an english town.... I consider myself a german canadian tho, but no, not dutch...unfortunately.

HAHAHAHAHAHAHA!!! just like some religious groups have predicted the end of the world for the 14th time in the past 70 years!! rofl, it's easy to find evidence things were to happen after they do. 1 000 000 years ago people didn't know jack about the world wars nor what caused them, which no one today seems to know either for that matter. I'm sorry spaniard but tHat's royal rubbish

That creeped me out too because there are also other things that say that same thing.  I know of one thing off the top of my head: I forget who predicted it but they made a list of all the Popes that were to come.  This guy made this hundreds of years before these men who would beocome Popes even lived.  What he predicted was that Pope John Paul II was the second last Pope.  After him would come another Pope (whose name I forget) and then a Pope named Peter.  After Peter, the World was to end.  This is only one I can remember.

The Bible Code said that the end of the World would come 7 years after Palestine and Israel make peace.  If this is true and the world is to end in 2012, those 2 will make some kind of treaty this year.  I am hoping that is does happen and that it doesn't because all this stuff seem rather believable.  Laugh if you want, but I think the end is near.

Sorry to be such an apocolyptic person here!

It is quite laughable to see that many people are actualy drawn to prediction made by religion. As we can see,why is the world ending in our time?Because people want to scare the living hell out of children and teens who have lives and dreams ahead of them(in my opnion)why is it that the apocalyptic word in the bible appeared in A.D not BC?It is because those drunk so-called apostles and priests didn't exist at that time...

Plz guys, save the breath. Instead of worrying about when the world is gonna end, let god or w/e god you believe in decide that. We do not walk the earth to judge such things, we are here to live and do what we can with the time that is givin to us.

I'm an American and even I hate the American Government. But when you've got a society running entirely on the rule of money, that's what happens... your government becomes corrupt. Greed rules in our country, and there's small wonder that it has developed such outrageous policies.

For example, it is nearly always the candidate with the most money behind him/her that will win an office. Is that democracy, when we elect our officials based on how much money they can weasel out for their campaigns?

I cannot see how any Europeans at all support America anymore, after the many insults the Bush administration has sent their way. The American government obviously thinks of our mother continent as small fry, and such hubris is not only unjust and disrespectful, it can become dangerous for the Europeans in the future.

dont be foolish, people have predicted the end of the world a million times every year for the last 6,000 years, and codes found in books dont work, because as Mixoatl mentioned thyat technique produces auspicious results when used on ANY text with alot of words.

If I remember right Kerry would have won the election if it was popular vote, but electorals took the win. Thats why they were talking about getting rid of electoral votes so much this election, atleast thats what I kept seeing on the news. Although I don't know who had more money Kerry or Bush.

Japan or Korea???? Your kidding me, how could even those countries combined conquer America???  America will fall from within, it has many different peoples and cultures and it will much more likley internally distentegrate than fall from an invasion.

Dude, America may not fall in one grand collapse, it may be gradual.

And Greece, Egypt, and india have all gone under foreign rule which has had a core shaking influence on them all to the poitn where culture, language and custums have been modified. sure they stil exist, btu now how they existed previously. It is just the cyle of life.

Now when you all speak of America falling, are you speaking of the american governement? The American corperations? The anmerican People? They are all different things. Because as soon as all the industry jobs of america are in china, all the services in america will fade away soon after leaving the middle class unemployed which will then fall to become the lower class, and the rich business men, the upper nobility. So the anerican ppl will fall, the american nation maybe also but not the rich business men, who will all still be american, just with their business in China.

I don't really believe ther will be any internation wars anymore, only wars between the classes. The glabale lower class against the globale upper rich class. We already see that after a fashion with the war of "terrorism", or at least teh beginning of it. THe only way America could be conquered by foreign invasion if is the business men of the world fall into factions and through conflict of interest, the business men of either side (china and america and europe) would then bring their puppet governements agaisnt each other.

And yes I'm saying the Anerican governement is a puppet governement, just like most other western and first world nations and all others really are too, it all depends on the money, who controls the media and what happens behind the scenes. See I've got nothing against the common American or the common innocent chinese citizen but thinking of either of their governements for more than 5 minutes makes my stomach turn.

i think maybe because USA is a single country whereas Europe is more than one country that most Europeans seem to think more about what other Europeans think of their country or what they think of other European countries rather than what the rest of the world thinks of their continent.

If we were ONE ethnicity we would have so many wars with so many different countries it wouldn't even be funny.  Unless people can live together with peoples of all types, this World will not get any better and any chance of World peace has just been destroyed.  But because some people live in countries where they don't experience as many groups as Americans World peaxe is a goal not going to be achieved.  Chen the "World Peace" topic.

People were against the Iraq war from the beginning, but no one was ever against the troops. Support the troops stickers and ribbons are everywhere. They still have the support the troops bumper stickers, and I see the support the troops ribbon stickers on 8/10 cars, people will never stop supporting the soldiers who fight for our freedoms.

Its still big news when soldiers come home. In the newpaper theres a section for the soldiers who are considered heros, living or dead. This sections is also for anyone else, like police officers or just people who have done good things.

Everyone has equal rights, thats equality. But for the rich and poor comment, everyone can be rich if they work for it. There are a hell of alot of cases like this with known people who weren't rich growing up making it big. Donald Trump had to work on everything he wanted, he took risks in businesses people thought would never make it. A few of his businesses went bankrupt a few times but he pulled them through.

Being in America isn't about sitting back and getting benifits, its about working for what you want, and you have to work for it. Some people have the will power, others don't.

Its not about benifits, its about the culture.
When you have companies laying off people inorder to balence the books, whilst at the same time giving its managing elite above inflation pay rises, and giving useless managing directors 'golden handsshakes', (as happens alot in the UK) you know the business culture is a sham.

Seems like more jobs are going over seas now. If a American wants tech help for something, then the call is sent to India. Factories are being moved to China constantly. We can't get simple jobs anymore. Its all over seas now.

But you do have the oppurtunity to goto schooling for jobs. I went to a tech school and I'm learning the electrical trade. I can make upto 30 bucks an hour as a apprentice, and if I get my Masters license I can make up 60 an hour. These schools are free, and if you never went to them they offer night school classes. My field is also one of the fastest growing trades.

Theres also college, in some cases you can get into them for free, or you can get 25,000 dollars from a program for as something as riduculous as have a polish heritage or playing a instrument. Theres millions of dollars that people don't claim from these programs, I guess not to many people know about them. I could have gotten some money for college for just living in my town.

So you can become successful if you try and theres things out there that will help you. In America you have to look for opportunity, its about making the best out of yourself, not what the country can do for you. Although its starting to seem that way, people living off the gov't.

I'd wager that the jobs moving overseas is only half the story, the other half is cheap labour moving into various countries. There are plenty of simple jobs, they just pay so low as to barely feed a single male migrant worker, let alone a family.

As for education, college educations are expensive, and grants can't cover all of it. if you come from a poorer educational background, or started off in a crappy inner city school, they your opportunities are screwed from the begining.
Sure, the opportunities are there, but they are not equaly available, not here in the UK at least.

It is thanks to groups like the ACLU that we have strong civil liberties in the U.S.. U.S. conservative love to demonize The American Civil LibertiesUnion (ACLU), because of their constructivist view on the 1st. Amendment about seperation of Church and State. The fascist-theocratic conservates, set on imposing Christianity as the official religion, hate them for it.

The ACLU is a non-partisan organization, who defends everyone, liberal or conservative, when their civil rights are being threatened. The ACLU helps keep the U.S. as free as The General described it.

All countries law's are based on morals. I suspect that the General is suppressing the premise that the U.S. is based on "Christian" moral. If so, I disagree strongly. Secularism has been a reason for the U.S. social and political success. Of course, if General meant humanistic morals, there is no disagreement.

There is a thread in intellectual discussion on how more religion plays a role on the U.S. Constitution. I invite the General to discuss what he means by "morals" in that thread.

ACLU has done some good in the past for civil liberties but they have also gone to extreme like defending perverted groups like North American Man-Boy Association and their sister group who preys on little girls. Their war against the Boy Scout is wrong. They are a private organization and they have that right. If I had time I could list a lot of actions that the ACLU has taken that is extreme and unpatriotic. But, if I did the research I know I would also find a list of positive things about them. I don't think the majority of Christians have any intention of imposing a theocratic government and the majority of devote Christians I know would oppose it. I am not a Christian and I understand your fear. The liberals can also go to an extreme, look at PC today. I got in trouble at work for making a simple opinion because it was not PC, loss of free speech and thought.

Posted By: SearchAndDestroy
Date Posted: 16-Apr-2005 at 16:18

ACLU also defended the Nazi party of America, which they want to take over America and take alot of freedoms away. The party wasn't aloud a rally it was trying to get a permit for in a town, so they took up the case and got a lawyer from the ACLU. Funny part is the lawyer was jewish, but he said its not about personal problems, its only about the people being able to exercise there rights even if it is unpratriotic.

The Christian conservatives that want to change the US into a more religeous nation are from the south east along the bible belt. Those are the people you have to worry about, may not be many, but they are preaching to there kids and the kids will probably take those teachings and so on, so the numbers only increase for those who would like to change America, and those are the people I worry about.

Eaglecap,

The fact that the ACLU protects such abhorrent people is what makes them so patriotic. The U.S. Consitution grants everyone the right to express their opinions in the U.S., even Boy-loving men and the Nazi party. The ACLU makes sure that the government grant these rights. There is nothing more American than defending the Constitution.

Notice that the ACLU defends these groups' right to express their opinions; the ACLU does not endorse their beliefs or practices.

I am very fond of the freedom of speech that the U.S. has. Practically no other country enjoys this freedom to such an extent. The ACLU has been key in protecting it for most of the 20th century.

Yeah, just like that American professor who condemmed American foreign policy for being the cause of the anti-american terrorism. The guy was fired and the governement stopped the article from obtainning proper publicity.

Just like the Anericans who check if any mad cow can be found in their stock. A retired American worker stated clearly on Canadian television there were many cases that could have been mad cow but they were told not to look, verify, or mention any of them while givin the distinct impression that if they opened their mouthes about it, they'd be fired. The only reason this guy spoke up was because he was already retired. (He stated this reason)

Just like the people who speak badly of Bush and have policemen show up on their doorsteps at dinner?

You mean you Americans actually believe all the propaganda?

Can you get me a article about that professor?

I can see why about that mad cow, it was wrong to do, but it would really hurt the economy right now if anything got out like that. Strange part is the news was talking about mad cow in America a few months ago and the cows being killed, so how recent is that, becaus ethe other case is pretty recent.

And about people critizing Bush, I haven't seen CNN go off the air yet and they are always talking down on him. How hes making bad decisions on the economy, about rushing the war without any plan, when the war first started they were talking about the possibility of him just trying to finish his fathers job because they said on CNN that there were atleast 25 other nations that could be considered a bigger threat then Iraq, and to things as weird of him not turning on the gyro in the Segways because it might take away the need for oil in the future and Cheny as we know is in that business or was. So I still see CNN and usually propaganda supports the gov't, the only real news station that is really pro bush is fox news.

If you, golden Phalaxe, are talking about Churchill, I'd just like to point out that HE WAS A TERRORIST!!!!  He incited terror and he actually said what the terrorists were doing was alright.  Any country with a sane leader would do so.  It was not because the gov't  did not like what he was saying but that it was untrue and was an act of treason!

Well theres a Neo-Nazi leader right now who talks about destroying the gov't and has followers who have arrsenals of weapons and he hasn't been arrested yet, some of his followers have though. So that guy must have said something that really hit a nerve, the gov't probably knows more and isn't saying anything about that guy(professor).

Umm, that doesn't make one a terroist.

And AFAIK, he still has his job (at least according to a thread i read on another forum yesterday), if he loses it, it will be over plagerism and lying about his background, technicly, though his employers being sick of all the bad publicity will be the real motive.

Freedom of speech eh???

You mean you Americans actually believe all the propaganda?

And no other country having true freedom rights? Rofl, ever heard of europe? Of Canada?

The United States does enjoy an almost unlimited amount of freedom of speech. Lately the religious fascists are chipping at it using indencency as their weapon. This is something to worry about. But besides that, anyone can say anything they want.

You have to give me more background to talk about the case of that professor. I remember the issue in a different way, but lately am suffering from allergies, and it messes up my memory.

The case with the meat inspectors is not a case of speech censorship from the government, but of corruption of the agency in charged of meat safety.

Most European countries have state censorship through hate speech codes. Germany comes to mind. Britain 's speech suffers from strong liabel laws. Liabel laws are extremely weak in the U.S., allowing most people to say anything they want about public figures as long as it is true or the person is so famous that they can use a public forum to defend themselves.

Canada has government regulated censorship in the form of hate speech codes. That is why you guys have not listened to a satirist like Howard Stern in about 10 years.

The Christian Taliban has successfuly taken away our right to enjoy smut as political payback for their backing of Bush Since they conquered on radio, they want to control content on cable and satellite radio. That is where the ACLU comes into place. By challenging these idiotic rules all the way to the U.S. Supreme Court, the court can rule them unconstitutional and strike them down. Hence my love for the ACLU.

They've been treated as " country cousins " by the Europeans LOL.

One Irish descent told me that some English regard Americans as " colonists " !

I've also heard there have been individual Americans fudged nationality to Canadian to avoid unpleasant attitudes ( anti-American sentiments ) from French locals while living in France.
