Carandiru Prison in Sao Paulo, Brazil, is definitely one of the America's worst prisons. It has double the maximum number of prisoners, and is wrought with violence and disease.

Nairobi Prison in Kenya is also atrocious.

The former Kurdish PKK leader, Abdullah Ícelan is in a maximum-security prison on an island. He is the only inmate.

Talk about security...

This isn't the "the most dangerous prison in the world", but in a class of its own.

They don't speak enough about the Kurds, because we have never taken hostages, never hijacked a plane. But I am proud of this.

I believe that you are thinking about San Quentin.  Alcatraz was closed decades ago.   And yes, San Quentin and other California prisons are  very dangerous due to a variety of ethnic based gangs and then factions with in even the ethnic centered gangs.

Well, if you define prison as a place where you are not free to leave, then my vote goes for the Holocaust concentration camps.
