    Posted: 20-May-2008 at 13:23
1627 - Moorish pirates attack Vestmannaeyjar and kidnaped 242 Icelander. Mostly Women and young people.

A warm July in 1627. Sailingboats from the north-african coast appeared at the coasts of the peaceful Island of Vestmann of destroyed the villages and hutts.

Many people were killed but about 300 prisoners were made by those pirates. Peaceful fishermen and their families were difiled by the African barbars.

Traumatically experiences for all Islanders.

13 of the pisplaced came back to iceland years later after a ransom was payed.

Nearly 400 years later this is allways in the memories of every Icelander. And some days they will strike back.

How? You'll send Bjork there? Now that would be a crime against humanity.

The Germans also take vacations in Paris; especially during the periods they call "blitzkrieg".

But if you think Bjork could be an adequate revenge , you should have listen to some other Icelandic bands. If the moors would have done it before, they wouldn't have had the idea to drop over.

Times must have been tough in Barbary.  When your only economic activity is slavery and extortion you have to go where the action is I guess.

The knights of Malta were as bad as the barbary pirates if not even more. Also privateers from Italy were notorious and many coastal cities in Algeria were distroyed by them and all with the encouragement and consent of the Papal states and Italian city republics.

Well, Norse used to raid med countries as well, from Portugal to Sicily and North Africa as well.
In anycase, only when the Spaniards stopped the Turks in Lepanto and invaded North Africa Europe started to be free of the raids of berber pirates of North Africa.

The Genoese burned Southampton in 1340 and don't think we have forgotten. If we can ever get a football team together....

PS they burned Portsmouth in 1338, but that's OK. I feel like burning it myself this week.

Muslims? Which muslims? In fact, berbers pirates usually attacked Muslim and Christian countries without much piety. Berbers used to attack the coast of Al-Andalus, for instance.
In the Christian side, Venetians and Genoese treated each other with very little Christian respect LOL

Feel some pity for the pirate Ulrich, taken from the warm med to the freezing waters of Iceland. They probably never thought they'd see the sun again.

Alright.  This is turning into more of a Tavern topic than a historical discussion belonging in the Early Modern forum.  I think it has run its course.

Man your angry! I know its hot where you are from but not as hot as where I am now (41 today) yet I keep my cool. Go and drink some coke and then write something formal about the subject.
