    Posted: 01-Apr-2007 at 05:00

Due to a new bill sanctioned in the US House of Representatives, we have been contacted by our server, as we now are required to monitor all IPs to record all users' activity, IM conversations and email traffic indefinitely.

The bill, dubbed the Safety Act by a republican congressman from Texas, is imposing fines and a prison term of one year on domains who failed to keep full records.

I believe its the international nature of our community which has brought their attention upon us.

We will discuss this amongst the Admins, and we will answer them within a day or two. There is no question in my mind though, I simply refuse to take part in such an activity and I doubt they will put an old Dane in jail anyways.

What do you think of this?

this is ridiculous

US (and the Aussie) intelligence has all sorts of technology/capability to monitor anything suspicious on the web anyway. How can US law effect or be applied to an international site?

This is preposterous. We should defy them to our fullest capabilities, and mobilise the support of other online communities if they try to proceed to further action. May there be no fascism on the internet, let it remain free and democratic.
It is not the challenges a people face which define who they are, but rather the way in which they respond to those challenges.

It's insane...
They don't speak enough about the Kurds, because we have never taken hostages, never hijacked a plane. But I am proud of this.

Pay the king his shilling and get him off your back sir. Not worth fighting over. They may not send you to jail but they may close down the server.

And what are they gonna notice anyway? Cyrus, maqsad and myself are going to be the main ones of interest. let them look. Speaking for myself they will find everything as inetesting as madline albrights sex life.

The Germans also take vacations in Paris; especially during the periods they call "blitzkrieg".

Cywr, that visionary, was right when he suggested the purchase of Sealand to set up the server... LOL

That's just bollocks. That whole damn country just needs to lighten up a bit.

1. I question where this directive came from, as I have read nothing of it in the last month.

2.  I question wether or not anyone has the right to do this, as it seems to be counter to Constitutional rights.

3. It being my nature, I am writing an e mail to my Congressman expressing appropriate outrage.  Don't know if I'll get an answer but we'll see.

Maybe because the server enabling this site to breath is in United States.?

That's terrible! I am sure their request breaches the EU's Human Rights Act, allowing freedom of expression. A Texan has no jurisdiction of what I choose to do on an international forum. I am only accountable to English and European law, and by posting on this forum, I pose no threat to American security.

In my country, people can only store information on me with my written permission. That is stated in the Data Protection Act. If Texas wants to start storing up all my posts, IM's and e-mails, they are in serious breach of that act.

Why are they even wasting their time on this? It's an outrage.

<Timewarp> I've just sent a letter to the Prime Minister, Tony Blair about this one. I'll let you know if I get a reply.

I was thinking that the survey was already working. Especially today.
*Is there any funding available for doing this?

Begrudgingly, I have the list of I.P.'s you wanted Northman, in case you need it. I also want to tell you to take this Safety Act information and shove it up that congressman's rear end!

I fear that if you don't comply they will shut the forum down... There's a lot of info and good posts here and it would be a damn shame for those to be lost. I'd say comply in the short run (it's you Admins that will have the records anyway, right?) and then try to find a server in another country (like Canada or in Europe). Just my opinion for all it's worth.
