Istanbul is great if you are a tourist.

It is hell if you actually live there, and have to go work (or school) everyday.

Exactly!

I live in Ankara, but I visited Istanbul many times.

The sea, mosques, museums are great. Everyone should see them at least once in a lifetime.

However I really wouldn't live there.

Istanbul is overrated either by Turks and some Europeans.it can never be like Rome, Venice or even Kyiv to me.It is best of Turkey yes but it doesn't make it a great city.

I am from Ankara and that should explain why I dislike Istanbul

Well compared to ankara,  Istanbul is a heaven. Thanks to Ataturk, without declearing ankara as capital, It would not be even a small city.

Hehe, I lived at ankara 6 month. It was like hell. and no sea, no life, no soul.

If I becomes older, maybe I can move ankara. But still having fun from life.

By the way, I didnt say they are villager, but they would be If they were not capital. Its prosperity dont comes from city itself, but Turkey(so istanbul)

they think they live in heaven or the best city in the world

Exactly true! I agree with them

but in fact they live in the biggest village of Turkey

That is true, but remember reason is, 11 million of people love istanbul and want to stay at istanbul

But you are right, Ankara is cleaner.(but remember money comes from Istanbul). well girls, Izmir is only city you can compare with istanbul.(Infact Izmir is better)

I never visited Ankara, but I've been to Istanbul and must say I enjoyed it very much, I felt very welcomed, almost at home. Sure it was crowded and (sorry to say) a bit dirty but it was alive and had soul in it. Plus I'm addicted to the sea and I love sea-side cities. One thing I didn't like at all though it was the people coming over to talk to me and trying to sell me things! You have to do something about it because tourists don't enjoy it at all.

Btw, the story goes that when the Megareans wanted to find the best possible place to build a colony, they asked the oracle of Delphi. The priestess replied that they should built it "opposite to the city of the blind). The Megareans send expeditions to parts of the Mediterranean but could not find a city populated by blind citizens. Until one of them reached Chalcedon (another Greek colony on the Asian side, opposite to Byzantium) and saw the view accross the Bosporus, understood that this was the place the oracle had mentioned, since the Chalkedonians must have been blind not to occupy that privileged place and having build their colony where they did.

The captain was called Byzas and hence the city was called Byzantion. It prospered from tuna fish fishing and more important from commerce with Greece, the Black Sea colonies and Asian tribes.

Chalcedon (another Greek colony on the Asian side, opposite to Byzantium)

Chalcedon is called Kadikoy today, and considered a part of Istanbul. I think someone would settle the spot eventually, because it is so obviously important, geographically speaking. If the Greeks hadn't than the Romans or the Ottomans would have.

Now:

- Ankara cannot be compared to Istanbul, in historical and modern significance, neither can Venice. Rome, yes, to a degree.

- All cities in Turkey including Ankara, were founded by someone other than Turks, when the Turks lived on horseback in Central Asia, worshipped the sky and looked like Mongols.

- Ankara is famous for gray concrete government buildings, and officials in gray suits, and sh*tty weather. Definitely not for its girls. Everyone in Ankara have moustaches and wear suits, including the girls.

- If Istanbul is ugly and dirty today, the Turkish Republic, which is governed from Ankara, are responsible for it.

- They asked the Turkish poet, 'What is it do you like best about Ankara?', he replied 'Return trip to Istanbul'. True story.

- Whenever I tell a foreigner I am from Istanbul, they reply 'Oh, the capital!'.  Even the Japanese write songs about Istanbul, nobody even knows Ankara is the capital.

- In short, Ankara is the Turkish Republic, Istanbul is the Ottoman Empire.

- Don't get me wrong, I am extremely happy that Ankara is the capital. Otherwise Istanbul would have been 20 millions today, and we'd have to live with together with the Turkish politicians.

Istanbul is modern? Rain is a natural disaster for Istanbul!

Yeah, throw your rubbish to streets and blame politicians for that.

Noone said Istanbul is better than Ankara, it is nonsense to claim otherwise. But have you ever been to Rome?Rome has more to offer either for its nightlife or for history. What makes istanbul more interesting is its Ottoman heritage nothing more.ah,and yeah Hagia sophia sorry...

What does mongols have to do with Ankara?Istanbul is beautiful because Turks built it?Ankara as a name might refer to an era before Turks but is built %99 by Turks. You could call Ankara as village before 1920's but now it is a city.Istanbul doesn't even have a metro except for that symbolic one

If you have only been to downtown area you are right. As for the dudes with mustaches I think Istanbul is full of them.Judging by its population Istanbul has more mustaches than Ankara's whole poupulation

Goverments are not supposed to clean streets or renovate the sidewalks. It's your mayor's job.Don't blame goverment for everything.

Typical, pure Istanbullu ignorance. Whenever I visit Istanbul I look forward to get out of that jungle.
