    Posted: 09-Jul-2006 at 12:11
In India, nearly 1,000,000 abortions are carried out every year simply because the baby is female.

The reasons are cultural and economic. Culturally, sons generally play some role in the family's work, even after they are married - while a daughter benefits only the family she marries into.

Economically, in Indian culture the bride's family is expected to pay a significant dowry on their daughter's wedding day and families simply cannot afford it.

Economic factors seem to be the most influential because most abortions of female babies are carried out in prosperous areas of India.

Now, the reason I've started this discussion is because Indian experts are saying there are simply not enough women left in India, and it's only going to get worse as today's children (1 year - 14 years old) - which are estimated to be more than 70% male - grow up.

They suspect this will lead to women becoming more a commodity - with forced marriages, kidnappings, and other negative side effects becoming very common.

What do you think about this?

They have a similar problem in rural China already.

Mostly it's worked in women's benefit as they get a wider and better choice of men.

IF the statistics are correct. Maybe the men will start paying the dowryBig smile

It may also lead to a rise in the practice of polyandry. Having said that it may not really lead to any social problems anyway. As in Hinduism there is an inherrent acceptance of polyandry. As the ancient text of Mahabharta acknowledges polyandry, in specific it mentions the Pandava, the five brothers married to the one wife, Drupadi.

From the CIA factbook

at birth: 1.05 male(s)/female

Wait a minute. I just reread your figure. I refuse to believe that 1 million girls are being killed every year. It's just not physically possible.

edit:
So there are 1 million girls. That's 0.1% of our population. But then look at the birthrate. I don't know it so lets say its 1 billion divded by 69 (average age expectancy in India).

That gives 7% of all babies, which seems possible. So I could be wrong, but I dont like that number of 1 million.

On polyandry, this isnt so common in India right now. Polygamy is more common amongst Indian Hindus than Indian Muslims in fact in India. I dont know why it's sometimes used as an example in places of a matriarchy, India is for sure deeply patriarchial.

It might be that there's no consequences if the male ratio plummets due to disease and illness like in the last dodgy census (why this is male specific is odd). Main problems appear to be in Haryana and Rajasthan.

The figure for female foeticide in India according to the Lancet study is half a million every year, though it's mainly occurred in the last couple of decades. A figure of 1 million is easily possible I think. Economic reasons, dowries would play a big part.

I heard its more of a regional thing, that whilst common in some areas, uncommon in others.

Tele

I know that the vedas accept polygamy, i was just saying that there is also an acceptance of polyandry on religious grounds. It is interesting as noted by u and cwyr, the regional disparity.

what do you think makes Haryana and Rajhastan more susceptible to such practice. I would if i was shooting in the dark say land division, or something like that.
