and many do.

Social stratification based on birth is simply medieval. The best thing Europe did was to largely dump that 'god given right' rationale behind someones 'place in society'. You think they could of jumped into modernity otherwise?

Not much.
Are there many examples of descendants of "Harijan" and "Shudra" who had studied at university and made it to the upper-middle classes?

Ambedakar was architect of Constitution.

Could a rich "Harijan" integrate easily into higher society? Or would he face rampant discrimination just because of his low caste?

Depends how you define INTEGRATION and DISCRIMINATION.

There are and have been ministers, governors, judges, Chief Ministers etc. from every religion and caste. But to rise from literal rags to literal riches is never easy for ANYONE, in any society, be it christian or muslim or Hindu, Indian or westren. But Mafatlal did build an industrial empire.

Would I decline to share table with someone? No. Would I share his food? Maybe, maybe not. Depends on the food. I donot partake of meat, poultry, fish etc.

Would I eat from the platter of another, even if of my caste? NEVER.

Will I socialise, at family level, with any one? Depends on his life style. Caste no criterion.

Did I consider marrying outside of my caste? NEVER.

Does anyone enquire about someone's caste? NEVER, except if and only if matrimony is in mind.

Thanks for all your messages about Cast System, my findings are below as I have studied through different books and feel and see my self in the north Indian society.

The word "Hindu" actually is not a religion itself, this is geographical identity. whoever, came in India and resides, called Hindu ( as Indian now a days). But there are great books written by great schollors of those days. We see a big differences in different ares.

Cast System started with the coming of "Aryans" who came from Iran and East Europe. They devided the society in 5 categories as one brother has mentioned above. The real Indian at that time escaped to the south of the country and remaining were used for low catagory's works, cleaning and others, as lower cast.

So the actual Indian (as before Arayns) either are in South India or are the Lower Cast (Schedule cast and tribe) of northan India.

These north indian Lower Cast (Schedule Caste and Schedule Tribes) were in very bad conditions up to now, They were not able to toch any upper cast man, seprate temples, seprate wells, seprate beches. Even they were not able to enter in the residential areas.

In Islam or Christinity there is no caste systems like this. yet they devide them selves as per their works.

Many Hindus converted to Islam before and lately to Christinity to avoide the discrimination. Especially in Orisa state there are many cases for the last few years and continue though on different scales.

Now there are changes in whole of India, because of 'Congress' government and recently Mayawati's goverment in the state of U.P.  Lower cast now feel confidence.  There is hope all will be equal in the new modern India.

What ? Thats so mean !! They divided themselves into castes. Oh my god. ? And Hindu is a person that follows hinduism while hindustani is an indian in hindi. To clear things up. Because then what would you call someone that follows Hinduism. Big smile<< love that smiley face it looks so cute

For South Indin no problems, they have freedom for everything. They are using their own languages and are almost free of this cast system. But the lower cast of north India are still in poor condition generally. Congress governments helped a lot in that case for many years by giving employmenet in goverment jobs. Actually they were in bed conditions financially and socially. Though India was ruled by Muslims almost thousand years and by Britishers almost hundred years yet lower cast situations did not change because this is the religious system of present Hindu religion. It can not be changed unless either they come out of it or bring sort of revolution in this system.  But there there is hope as India is developing financially, in big cities people are working in a mix society, they do not care of religion and cast cast. Besides this there are changes in rural areas like UP and Maharashtra, thanks.
