If I read only one book on the US Civil War, what should it be?

I'm looking to gain a solid understanding of the battles, operations and overall strategies employed by the two sides in a single book.
Like great battles? How about when they're animated for easy viewing?

Try the Batte Cry of Freedom by James M. McPherson which seems to offer what you maybe looking for. Also Shelby Foote's three volume narrative on the Cvil War appears to be very good in offering a solid history even though it maybe a little expensive.

Best of luck to you in finding a good book!

Bruce Catton's Centennial History of the Civil War.

It also comes in three volumes: The Coming Fury, Terrible Swift Sword, and Never Call Retreat in chronological order.

PS It's in paperback

US Grants memoirs.
The Germans also take vacations in Paris; especially during the periods they call "blitzkrieg".

I too read Battlecry freedom, it is very good though one thing to bear in mind is that only the second half of the book deals with the actual war and of that a lot is about the politics on the home front. So if you just want to read about the battles maybe look elsewhere.

Let me get back with you on this. I did a graduate paper about the cause of the war between the states but it must be on the hard drive of my home computer. I will paste some of the books I used for my research and ones assigned by the instructor.

Well then, brothers and fellow citizens and soldiers, remember this in order that your memorial, your fame and freedom will be eternal.
