Believe it or not the second record I ever purchased was 'Paranoid'. The first was 'More of the Monkees' from you guessed it - the Monkees.

I would rate Sabbath's first as one of their darker but overall masterpiece recordings. The production sounds pretty good too. Paranoid has all the top radio hits (yes people - Ironman, Paranoid and Warpigs regularly graced the local AM stations back in the day).

...Yeah, the first album is great and a good sound....there is a rawness there, but being a simple four piece, the tightness of the songs shine through....even the Oz sounds at his best....as for 'dark', i think it is difficult to beat the song Black Sabbath..wind, rain and doom laden tolling bells and 'that' most simple but granite like riff....masterpiece of rock...

..funny you should mention The Monkees, i too had a fondness for not only the TV show but the music as well which persevered a lot longer than was probably necessary and well past the 'what is not cool' stage...!!...Monkees and heavy metal mayhem....a perverse combination.....

...all the best....AoO...
