US Ranked 4th

AP - After determining the Big-12 championship game participants the BCS computers were put to work on other major contests and today the BCS declared Germany to be the winner of World War II.

“Germany put together an incredible number of victories beginning with the annexation of Austria and the Sudetenland and continuing on into conference play with defeats of Poland, France, Norway, Sweden, Denmark, Belgium and the Netherlands. Their only losses came against the US and Russia; however considering their entire body of work–including an incredibly tough Strength of Schedule–our computers deemed them worthy of the #1 ranking.”

Questioned about the #4 ranking of the United States the BCS commissioner stated “The US only had two major victories–Japan and Germany. The computer models, unlike humans, aren’t influenced by head-to-head contests–they consider each contest to be only a single, equally-weighted event.”

German Chancellor Adolph Hiter said “Yes, we lost to the US; but we defeated #2 ranked France in only 6 weeks.” Herr Hitler has been criticized for seeking dramatic victories to earn ’style points’ to enhance Germany’s rankings. Hitler protested “Our contest with Poland was in doubt until the final day and the conditions in Norway were incredibly challenging and demanded the application of additional forces.”

The French ranking has also come under scrutiny. The BCS commented “France had a single loss against Germany and following a preseason #1 ranking they only fell to #2.”

Japan was ranked #3 with victories including Manchuria, Borneo and the Philippines.

United States head coach Harry S Truman was criticized by many as having poor taste for scheduling a “politicking” interview during halftime of the German bombing raids over Great Britain.

In that interview, Truman stated, “Any way you look at it, there is going to be a really good military force that gets left out. But when you come right down to it, our head-to-head victory over the Germans has to be the deciding factor.”

A US fan also made the point that “Germany is getting all the style points right now because of their sexy offense, which continues to obliterate weaker opponents and show off their might after the battle is already won. But what about defense?”

Too much Smile

I would dispute Germany's number one ranking though. As part of her non-conferance schedule Germany also won at Libya, where they faced a bunch of allied underclassmen, and then later defeated a lesser FCS foe in Yugoslavia. Those games alone should have lowered the Nazis computer rankings. Plus an early season upset against rival GB at the 'Battle of Britain' showed how pathetic Germany's aerial attack really was. Sure, they had a good ground game but only against the weaker WEAC (Western European Allied Conference). Against the ACC champs (American Continental Conference) they got smeared. Coach Patton's team remained undefeated too.

Eventually smarting from pscyhological setbacks, late in the season Germany huddled together for a bunch of hail mary's and went with a pro-style attack. Hitler employed new weapons in the V-1 and V2 rockets plus speedy receviers in the Messerschmitt 262. Yet that didn't do them any good when it came to the big game. Some have called it the game of the century but I saw it as another BCS bust. Underdog Germany (weird to be called an underdog when you're ranked number one, yes?) thought it could hold onto to its number one position at the Battle of the Bulge. The Wehrmacht marched on down the Ardennes in the first quarter and took the Americans off guard in methodical fashion by taking advantage of inclement weather. After a calm speech at halftime -"nuts" - the Yanks held their ground with renewed vigor by employing the Bastogne formation. The Germans looked tired by the fourth quarter and soon lost in a rout. This only proves the old addage that no fancy West Kraut offense could hold up against a strong defense.

To sum it up, Germany lost to her rivals in all the big games. Battle of Britain, the Bulge and not to forget that overtime killer - Stalingrad. How on earth could Germany be ranked so high by the BCS?

I say that the human polls should carry more weight then a bunch of faceless computers.

My order of Ranking

1) USA Yanks (American Continental Conference champ and BCS winner)
2) Russian Bears (East European Allied Conference winner)
3) Great British Bulldogs (bowl winners from the WEAC)
4) Japanese Rising Suns (previous leader of the Oriental Axis Conference)
5) German Nazis (EAC-European Axis Conference Champs)

Somewhere down the line is unranked Italy. Perennial cellar dwellars of the EAC.

I put Germany higher then 5 on my rankings becasue event though the EAC championship was disbanded in 1908 when Italy joined the EAC Germany widley won that confrence by over ten countrys.ANd after a tough late loss with another rival in USA at home in the battle of the bulge they continued to show theyre superior domminence over Italy.
I also rank them higher then OAC winner Japan due to the one very tough loss to America by a few thousand soldiers while Germany had smaller closer losses and took more casulties down with them.Japan also continued to  lose to AA australia and AA New Zeland both from the South East Pacific Confrence.
I have USA number one because without there defeat of Germany late in the season Germany would of been the champions.

My top 5
1.USA Yanks
2.Germany Nazis
3.Britan Bulldogs
4.Russian Bears
5.French Resistence Rebels

LOL  Hilarious, points out the ridiculous nature of the current system quite well.  I'm just waiting for the day they come up with anything better than the current one, some sort of playoff/bowl combination would do just fine.  At least they got the championship game right.  (well, maybe)

BCS, stands for Bowl Championship Series and is the system that NCAA Football Bowl Series (formerly 1A) uses to determine a championship game for college football in the US.

This system is very frequently under fire because in addition to using objective polls, like computer rankings based on how teams performed in games. It also uses subjective polls, like the media and coaches, who pick the rankings of teams in college football from #1 to #25. The goal is that by the end of the year you have the number one and number two team playing each other. The problem with the system though is that you can have a team with one loss be the number one team and a team with no losses be the number five team because team five has played weaker opponents. Also if you have three undefeated teams one of them gets left out of the Championship game. Many boosters of the school feel that their team was more deserving to get into a Championship game so they claim that the BCS is stupid and doesn't work. This is why the BCS system is constantly being insulted.

beorna,

Are you suitably confused now?

The whole system is so blatantly manipulated by certain interests in intercollegiate sports (read big money interests) and by the broadcast networks, that it is nothing but a jumble of conflicts of interest.  The whole thing is predicated on little else than selling reputation by electronic media, and on doing whatever is necessary to keep most of the money in the big athletic conferences (about six of them).  If you are confused by all of this, you have company, and you may be as disgusted as alot of the rest of us are.  If so, follow European football.  Wink

Listen to you us beorna. You can have better luck with the lottery than you can trying to figure out the BCS.
