Perhaps the most spectacular weapon of pre-contact Americas were the boleadoras or bolas (balls) ![]() Today, the Argentinean Gaucho (cowboy), inheritor of the pehuence and tehuelche traditions, still uses the boleadoras, like yesterday. Not to hunt guanacos or ñandues (ostriches) like in the past,
but to dance a folk dance called mallambo.
![]() The malambo is a game similar to jumping the rope, but with the boleadores instead. You try to dance avoiding hiting the feet.... or somewhere else
![]() More info on the bola or boleadora:

Fascinating. Was this an Aztec weapon? It looks well suited to Aztec
style ritual warfare, where the aim was to take live captives for
sacrifice later rather than kill the enemy in battle.

It is not the challenges a people face which define who they are, but rather the way in which they respond to those challenges.

I doubt Aztec used it. However, it use was widespread in the Argentinean southern "pampas". Bolas are dangerous weapons, though. You can kill a person if it by a ball in the head! I doubt would be a safe way to capture enemies alive

From what I've heard, the Inka used them as an anti-cavalry weapon, and they were quite effective in that regard. That "fencing" trick sounds very interesting. wouldn't be good in a tight formation, but neither is sword-fencing.

You bet. Incas knew the "slings and stones" weapons of the kind David used to kill Goliath. They also knew bolas, that's the weapon we are talking here. Both are still used today in the upper andes. The bolas in an excelent weapon to hunt, rather than to battle. You throw the bolas and when they hit the traget they capture the animal by itself, stopping any movement. Bolas never replaced bow and arrows or spears in combat, but they were supperior to stop fast animals like ostrichs and guanacos. And, of course, if you hit a rider with that he is gone to the ground, for sure. Now, it seem the weapon is better for using while riding, rather than by feet. |

quite. a lot of ranged weapons seem to be more effective when set on a "weapons platform" like a horse. Comes from increased mobility and height. I find it mildly ironic that an effective anti-cavalry weapon is most useful when used by cavalry.
