    Posted: 11-Jan-2006 at 11:43

As you know Persian girl names are mostly names of flowers (such as Banafsheh=Violet, Narges=Narcissus), Animals (such as Ahoo=Deer, Ghazal=Gazelle) or Trees (such as Sarvenaz=Cypress, Lila=lilac) but it is interesting that in the ancient times Persian gilrs had very sexy names (of course some of them are still used), for example name of one of Sassanid princess was Khoshfarberan!! (Khosh=Beautiful, Farbe=Fat, Ran=Leg) [a girl who has beautiful fat legs!] or another one was Narpestan!!!! ([A]Nar=Pomegranate, Pestan=Breast) [a girl who has breasts like pomegranate!]

I remember seeing a website on ancient Persian names a few years ago. The names were pretty amazing, one girls name had 6 letters including 4 'x'

i personally think that iranians should through out their arabic names and go back to the persian ones.

nothing against arabs at all, but its just that we have our own names, why not use them? why let them die?

i myself have an arabic name but when i have children, they are all getting 100% iranian names.

I agree, i won't give my kids other than iranian names, but i would blame no one for giving the kids arabic names.

BEGUM is very common 2nd name for women in Pakistan also(and afghanistan, I think), as is KHANUM.

My mum was  Safia Begum before marriage.

They are more of a kind of title then a name.

They are the female equivelant of BEG and KHAN.

I think the origins of both are certainly Central Asian Turkic.
