Who was Ahmad shah Massud in your eyes?

In my eyes, he was an educated Mujahid and hero of Afghanistan who fought against Soviets and fanatic Talibans.

I think of him as just another warlord. No better or worse than any other one (well, probably a bit better than the worst, like Dostum)

100%  agreement. I'll never forget a documentary that I saw about him and his group that was made shortly before his death.  Afghanistan lost a real patriot and a true Moslem.

Dear there are many documentaries made in favor of people (which are just missing a single line to be printed on the left bottom corner of it saying "Paid For") so I would like to avoid those documentaries and rather would like to speak of the fact, the fact that the Afghan nation knows and have suffered from.

Like all other warlords, he was just another one of them who left the engineering faculty along with Hekmatyar and ran out to Pakistan where the rest of the warlords were waiting.
And ones he got to the north of Afghanistan, from that day till his death he has served the Russians well.
I am sure that many would say "what the hell?" but that's the fact and that's what everyone knows while some bravely says it and some closes their eyes and makes him a hero.
If he is a hero then no less is Hekmatyar, Rabani, Sayaf, Mujadidi, Dustom, Mazari and the rest of the warlords.
Oh and if someone destroys his/her own country and gets the name of HERO then for sure Mullah Omer is a fugetive and a villain, otherwise his time was way better than that of those warlords, who are still living at large and doing what ever they want.

So please before calling him a HERO, for once ask your own conscience about what you want to say.

Soviets, that's the funniest thing I have heard hahahahahah.
Taleban, 100% correct as Moscow and Tehran never wanted a strong US backed guerilla warriors on their borders.

My dear Suren, I am sure that you do know that when the Soviet army left Afghanistan they choose the land route through rough and hostile mountains of Panjsher, I mean if I was a Soviet soldier and had knew about what happened to the Britains trying to leave the country in 19th Century via East route (only 1 survived out of 4,500 men, for reference and your knowledge look for Dr. Brydon), I would had prefered shooting myself straight away rather then moving to Panjsher vally.

But no Soviets did pass and they pass without a single lose of life.

I guess this link will help you and let you know what the Soviet general (Gen. Gramov) had to say about it.

Well I am Pakistani, and he was against my countries interests (and against my country period) so I can't say he was someone I liked. But, I suppose he was loyal to his cause.
The Germans also take vacations in Paris; especially during the periods they call "blitzkrieg".

Truely said HE WAS LOYAL TO HIS CAUSE of destroying the entire country along with his other counterparts (warlords), and as far as Pakistan is concerned it was the first base which got him trained and made him a commander or truely to say a warlord, but for sure later on he turned against Pakistan due to his allegiance to the Russians and his anti America move, and for sure he along with Dustom has killed more Pakistanis than the Indians have done in 3 wars (65,72,99).

Edit: And that's the only cause that makes him a hero in North and Center of the country.
